Most travelers who walk into our clinic for an HIV test are anxious, in a hurry and worried about privacy. We have built the visit around all three. You can use a first name only, pay cash, sit in a private consult room, and have your result back the same visit. The hardest part of getting tested is usually the decision; the test itself takes minutes. If your exposure was very recent, talk to us first before testing, because a same-day decision about PEP matters far more than waiting for an antibody result.
Which HIV test to choose and when
HIV tests differ in what they detect and how soon after exposure they turn positive, which is called the window period. The rapid antibody fingerstick is the quickest and most common in our clinic, with results in 20 minutes from a single drop of blood. The 4th-generation laboratory test detects both the p24 antigen, which appears early, and HIV antibodies, which appear later, and is our preferred routine screen. HIV RNA, also called nucleic acid testing or PCR, looks for viral genetic material and turns positive earliest, which makes it the test of choice if we suspect very recent infection. We choose the right test for your exposure date and circumstances, and we explain what a negative result actually rules out.
HIV test types and window periods
| Test | Sample and turnaround | Reliable window after exposure | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid antibody (fingerstick) | Drop of blood, 20 minutes in clinic or at your hotel. | About 23 to 90 days. | Quick reassurance, exposure more than 3 weeks ago. |
| 4th-generation antigen/antibody (lab) | Venous blood, same-day or next-day report. | About 18 to 45 days. | Routine screening, sharper window, gold-standard antibody result. |
| HIV RNA / NAT (PCR) | Venous blood, lab reference, 1 to 2 days. | From about 10 to 14 days. | Suspected acute infection, fever and rash after high-risk exposure, confirming a borderline 4th-gen. |
PEP, PrEP and what we treat at the same visit
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a 28-day course of antiretroviral tablets that can prevent HIV infection if started within 72 hours of a high-risk exposure, and ideally within 24 hours. Our standard regimen follows WHO and BHIVA guidance: tenofovir disoproxil with emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) combined with dolutegravir or raltegravir, all available the same visit. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is for ongoing risk, taken either as a daily TDF/FTC tablet or, for men who have sex with men, as the 2-1-1 on-demand regimen around a planned exposure. While you are with us, we routinely offer screening for syphilis (RPR blood test), gonorrhoea and chlamydia (urine PCR or swab), and hepatitis B and C, because exposures that put someone at risk for HIV usually carry risk for these as well.
Privacy, discretion and how the visit works
Confidentiality is the most common reason patients choose us over a hospital. You can book with first name only, results are sent to your personal WhatsApp or held for in-clinic pickup, and nothing leaves our system without your consent. For hotel visits, our doctor or nurse arrives in plain clothes and carries a discreet case; reception is not informed of the reason. If you prefer not to have any record at all, we offer fully anonymous testing using a code. If a result is positive, we explain the next steps clearly, support you through the first 24 hours, and arrange linkage to a specialist HIV clinic, most often Bangkok Hospital Phuket, where antiretroviral therapy in Thailand is excellent and access is straightforward.
When to see a doctor
The two situations that need same-day action are a recent high-risk exposure within 72 hours, where PEP can still work, and a flu-like illness in the weeks after a possible exposure, which can represent acute HIV seroconversion. Both are reasons to walk in or message us today rather than waiting until you get home.
A condomless sexual contact, needlestick or shared injection in the last 72 hours. A fever, sore throat, rash, mouth ulcers or swollen lymph nodes within 2 to 6 weeks of a possible exposure. A known partner who has tested positive. Sexual assault. Any positive home or rapid test that needs confirmation. These situations may need PEP, urgent testing with PCR, and onward referral.
You are unsure which test you need, or your exposure was very recent. Choosing the wrong test or the wrong day wastes time and reassurance. A 15-minute consult with our medical team gives you the correct test, the correct timing, and a same-day PEP decision if it applies. Prevention and early self-care
Consistent condom use remains the most effective single measure against HIV during travel, and it also reduces other sexually transmitted infections. For people with ongoing risk, PrEP is highly effective when taken correctly and is widely used in Thailand. If a condom breaks or an exposure happens, do not wait to see if symptoms develop: PEP works best in the first 24 hours, and the door closes at 72 hours. Avoid sharing needles, razors or any item that may contact blood. After a known exposure, plan repeat testing at the right intervals rather than relying on a single early result, and continue safer-sex practices in the meantime.
Summary
HIV testing in Patong should be quick, private and matched to the timing of your exposure. The rapid fingerstick gives 20-minute reassurance for older exposures, the 4th-generation lab test sharpens the window and is our routine screen, and PCR detects infection earliest if symptoms or risk are recent. PEP is a same-day decision within 72 hours, PrEP protects against future risk, and we screen for other sexually transmitted infections at the same visit. If a result is positive, Thailand has excellent and accessible HIV care, and we will guide you through it.
“Patients almost always feel better the moment they walk out, regardless of the result. The hardest part is the decision to come in. The test itself is twenty minutes, and you leave with a clear plan.”

Frequently asked questions
How long after exposure should I get an HIV test in Patong?
If the exposure was in the last 72 hours, see us today to discuss PEP rather than waiting to test, because PEP is far more useful at that point. For a 4th-generation lab test, the most reliable window starts at about 18 days and extends to 45 days. A rapid antibody test is most accurate from 23 to 90 days. PCR detects infection earliest, from 10 to 14 days.
Is the test really confidential?
Yes. You can register with first name only, pay cash, and choose anonymous coded testing if you wish. Results are delivered to your personal WhatsApp or in clinic, never to a hotel desk. Nothing is shared with employers, insurers or any third party without your written consent.
Can the clinic come to my hotel for HIV testing?
Yes. Our doctor or nurse can do a rapid fingerstick HIV test, take blood for a 4th-generation lab test, and start PEP if needed, at your hotel anywhere in Patong, Kalim, Kamala, Karon and Surin, 24 hours a day. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 to arrange a discreet visit.
What if I am within 72 hours of a high-risk exposure?
Contact us straight away. PEP is most effective within the first 24 hours and the cut-off is 72 hours. Our standard regimen is TDF/FTC combined with dolutegravir or raltegravir, taken for 28 days. We can start it the same visit, with follow-up testing during and after the course.
Will you test for other STIs at the same time?
Yes, and we usually recommend it. A standard sexual health screen at the same visit covers syphilis (RPR blood test), gonorrhoea and chlamydia (urine PCR or swab), and hepatitis B and C. Many exposures that carry HIV risk carry these risks too, and they are often easier to detect and treat than HIV.
What happens if my result is positive?
We confirm the result with a second test, usually 4th-generation lab and PCR, and we sit with you to explain what it means. HIV is a manageable lifelong condition, not what it was twenty years ago. In Thailand, antiretroviral therapy is widely available and effective; we arrange linkage to a specialist HIV clinic, typically Bangkok Hospital Phuket, and support you through the first appointment.
