Most of the patients who message us for a hangover drip in Patong did Bangla Road or Soi Easy the night before, drank on an empty stomach, mixed beer with buckets, and woke up with a beach day, a dive trip or a flight already booked. We see this every morning. A properly built IV drip will not undo the alcohol, but it will pull you out of the worst of dehydration, nausea and headache fast enough to save the day, provided there is nothing more serious going on underneath.
Why you feel terrible: the physiology of a hangover
A hangover is not one thing. Alcohol suppresses antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which forces your kidneys to dump fluid, so you wake up profoundly dehydrated with sodium, potassium and magnesium depletion. It blocks thiamine (vitamin B1) absorption and use, which contributes to fatigue and brain fog. It inflames the gastric lining (alcoholic gastritis), which is why you feel nauseous and cannot face food. Acetaldehyde, the toxic intermediate your liver produces while clearing alcohol, drives the headache, flushing and sweating, and this is much worse in people with reduced ALDH enzyme activity (common in East Asian populations). Dark spirits, red wine and tequila carry congeners that worsen headache. Alcohol also fragments REM sleep, so even eight hours in bed do not refresh you. A good IV drip targets several of these mechanisms at once, which is why it works faster than tablets and Gatorade.
Our hangover IV drip protocol
We use a deliberately clinical protocol, not a novelty cocktail. Every bag is mixed at the bedside from licensed pharmacy stock by a registered nurse, and the doctor screens you first for cardiac, renal and allergy risks. The standard hangover drip runs over 60 to 90 minutes. You will usually feel the nausea lift inside ten minutes of the ondansetron going in, the headache ease as the fluid and magnesium load, and energy return in the second half hour as the B vitamins absorb. Most people walk out within two hours.
| Component | Role | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| IV fluid (1 L) | Normal saline 0.9% or Ringer’s lactate over 1 to 2 hours, restores intravascular volume. | Strong, established for dehydration. |
| B-complex + thiamine | Thiamine 100 mg plus B-complex, replaces alcohol-depleted cofactors. | Strong for thiamine in heavy drinkers, supportive for B-complex. |
| Ondansetron | 4 to 8 mg IV, blocks nausea and vomiting at the 5-HT3 receptor. | Strong, standard antiemetic. |
| Paracetamol or ketorolac | Paracetamol 1 g IV for headache, or ketorolac 10 to 30 mg IV (NSAID) once renal status confirmed. | Strong for symptomatic headache control. |
| Magnesium sulfate | 1 to 2 g IV, eases muscle ache, headache and supports cardiac rhythm. | Moderate for hangover headache and migraine overlap. |
| Optional add-ons | Glucose if hypoglycaemic, famotidine for gastritis, vitamin C 1 to 2 g, glutathione on request. | Variable. Glucose and famotidine are well established. Glutathione has limited evidence and we discuss this honestly. |
We do not stack ten vitamins for marketing reasons. We do not add benzodiazepines unless there are true withdrawal features, because withdrawal is a different diagnosis with different management. If you are taking prescription medication, blood thinners, antidepressants, or anti-seizure drugs, tell us before the cannula goes in, because some of these change what we will and will not mix.
Hotel-room hangover drip in Patong and Kalim
For most hangover calls in Patong, Kalim or Karon, our team reaches your hotel room in 15 to 30 minutes with a doctor and nurse, sterile cannula, IV pole, fluids, medications and a sharps container. The visit is private and discreet, which matters more than people expect when a partner or travel group is involved. Setup takes five minutes, the drip itself runs 60 to 90 minutes, and we monitor you the whole time. Many guests are functional enough to go on with a beach day, a delayed dive briefing or an evening flight afterwards. Read more about how the home-visit service works on our Doctor Hotel Visit in Patong page, and see the full IV drip menu if you are not sure a hangover drip is the right choice.
Who we will not give a hangover drip to
An IV is a medical procedure, and a hangover does not override the usual contraindications. We will not give a routine hangover drip to people with severe heart failure or severe kidney impairment because of fluid overload risk, known allergy to any component, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency if high-dose vitamin C is requested, or in pregnancy without individual doctor review. We are also cautious if you take diuretics, recent NSAIDs, or have had a recent gastric bleed. The risks of the drip itself are small but real: vein irritation or phlebitis, local bruising, rare allergic reaction, and fluid overload in vulnerable patients. The screening question set takes two minutes and is what keeps complications rare.
Confusion, unresponsiveness or persistent vomiting (possible alcohol poisoning, aspiration, or Wernicke encephalopathy in heavy drinkers). Severe chest pain or palpitations (alcohol can trigger atrial fibrillation or acute coronary syndrome). Severe abdominal pain, especially radiating to the back (acute pancreatitis from binge drinking is common and life-threatening). Yellow eyes or skin (acute alcoholic hepatitis). Blood in vomit (Mallory-Weiss tear, or oesophageal varices in chronic heavy drinkers). Seizure or loss of consciousness. Head injury or unwitnessed fall overnight. These need an emergency department, not a hangover drip.
You are uncertain whether your symptoms are a normal hangover or something more serious, your hangovers are getting heavier with the same amount of alcohol, you cannot keep oral fluids down for more than 12 hours, or you have a chronic condition (heart, kidney, liver, diabetes) and binge-drank. A 15-minute consultation is much cheaper than a missed diagnosis. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 for a same-day clinic appointment or hotel visit.
Prevention and honest harm reduction
The only thing that reliably prevents a hangover is drinking less. Beyond that, the evidence supports practical, unglamorous measures: alternate every alcoholic drink with a glass of water, eat a real meal before and during drinking to slow absorption, pace under one drink per hour so the liver keeps up, and sleep at least seven hours afterwards. Clear spirits (vodka, gin) carry fewer congeners than dark spirits (whisky, rum, brandy) and red wine, so if you are hangover-prone, switching can help. Pre-loading thiamine and B-complex tablets is cheap insurance with no strong evidence base, but no real downside either. There is no magic supplement, no pre-loaded IV that prevents a hangover, and no pill that lets you drink heavily without consequence.
Summary
A hangover IV drip in Patong, built around one litre of saline, B vitamins, an anti-nausea drug, an analgesic and magnesium, will move you from wrecked to functional inside an hour for most people. The clinically important parts are the screen before, the discipline of not giving it to the wrong patient, and the willingness to send you to hospital when the picture is alcohol toxicity, pancreatitis, a cardiac event or a head injury rather than a hangover.
“A hangover drip is a useful tool, not a miracle. The first job is to be sure it really is a hangover, the second is to give the right components at the right doses, and the third is to be honest that moderation is the only thing that prevents the next one.”

Frequently asked questions
Does a hangover IV drip actually work?
For most people, yes, in the sense that the worst symptoms (nausea, headache, dizziness, weakness) ease significantly within 30 to 60 minutes. That is because the drip directly treats dehydration, electrolyte loss and nausea, which together drive most of the suffering. It does not remove acetaldehyde faster than your liver already does, and it does not restore lost sleep, so a small residual hangover can persist into the afternoon.
How long until I feel normal again?
Noticeable improvement in 30 to 60 minutes, full resolution typically within two hours for a standard one-litre drip. Heavier hangovers, mixed drinking, and patients who started badly dehydrated may need a second bag or oral fluids and rest for the rest of the day.
Can the doctor come to my hotel in Patong for the drip?
Yes. A doctor and nurse can be at your hotel in Patong, Kalim, Kamala, Karon or Surin within 15 to 30 minutes most of the day, 24 hours including post-Bangla mornings. We bring everything sterile and packaged, and the visit is private. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 with your hotel name and room number.
What does a hangover drip cost in Patong?
Pricing depends on the components chosen, whether you come to the clinic or we come to your hotel, and the time of day (late-night calls cost more than daytime). It is consistently cheaper than the same treatment in a private hospital, and we provide itemised receipts you can submit to travel insurance. WhatsApp us for the current price for your situation before we set anything up.
Can I dive or go on a boat trip the same day as a hangover drip?
For boat trips and snorkelling, most patients are fit to go after a drip plus a meal and a rest. For scuba diving, we advise extra caution. Residual alcohol and dehydration both raise decompression illness risk, and even after a drip your body is still clearing acetaldehyde. We generally recommend skipping the dive that day, hydrating orally, sleeping, and diving the next day instead. Speak to your dive operator about their own fitness-to-dive rules.
Is it safe to have a hangover drip if I take prescription medication?
Usually yes, but the doctor needs the full list first. Blood thinners, antidepressants (especially SSRIs and MAOIs), anti-seizure drugs, lithium, diuretics, beta-blockers and methadone can all change which medicines we add and at what dose. Ketorolac is avoided with anticoagulants and in renal impairment. Ondansetron has rare cardiac interactions. A two-minute conversation prevents almost all of this, so do not hide medications from us.
