STD testing is one of the most common private requests we see in Patong, particularly after a new partner, a condom break, or a holiday encounter. Patients often arrive worried and unsure what to ask for. Our role is to take a brief, non-judgemental history, recommend the right tests for the right window period, and treat any positive result the same day where possible. Everything is handled in a private consulting room, results go only to your WhatsApp, and no medical information is shared with hotels, tour operators or anyone else.
What an STD test actually involves
A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is any infection passed through vaginal, anal or oral sex, or through close genital contact. Some, such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, are bacterial and curable with antibiotics. Others, such as HIV, hepatitis B and herpes, are viral and managed long-term. The right test depends on what you may have been exposed to, how long ago, and your symptoms. A typical screen combines a blood draw (HIV, syphilis, hepatitis), a urine sample (chlamydia, gonorrhoea) and, where relevant, a self-collected vaginal, rectal or throat swab. Pre-test counselling and written consent take ten minutes; sample collection is another five.
Tests we offer and window periods
| Infection | Test we use | Window period from exposure |
|---|---|---|
| HIV | 4th-generation antigen/antibody blood test, rapid antibody fingerstick, or HIV RNA PCR for early detection. | 4th-gen 18 to 45 days; rapid antibody 23 to 90 days; RNA PCR 10 to 14 days. |
| Syphilis | RPR plus treponemal antibody (TPHA or chemiluminescent immunoassay). | 3 to 6 weeks. |
| Gonorrhoea | NAAT (nucleic acid test) on urine, vaginal, rectal or throat swab. | 1 to 2 weeks. |
| Chlamydia | NAAT on urine or swab. | 1 to 2 weeks. |
| Hepatitis B | Surface antigen (HBsAg), surface antibody (anti-HBs), core antibody (anti-HBc). | 4 to 10 weeks. |
| Hepatitis C | Hepatitis C antibody, with reflex PCR if positive. | 4 to 10 weeks. |
| Herpes (HSV-1, HSV-2) | PCR swab of an active lesion, or IgG blood test for past exposure. | Swab when lesion present; IgG 6 to 12 weeks. |
| Trichomoniasis | NAAT or wet-mount microscopy from vaginal or urethral sample. | 1 to 4 weeks. |
HPV is not routinely tested in asymptomatic men, as there is no validated screen. In women, HPV is detected as part of cervical screening, which we can arrange separately. A comprehensive panel is appropriate if you have had multiple partners, condomless sex, anonymous encounters or any symptoms. Targeted testing is reasonable when you know the specific risk, for example a known partner with chlamydia.
Treatment, partner notification and follow-up
Most bacterial STIs are treated the same day in the clinic. Chlamydia responds to doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for seven days, or azithromycin 1 g as a single dose when adherence is uncertain. Gonorrhoea is treated with ceftriaxone 500 mg intramuscular, plus oral doxycycline if chlamydia co-infection is possible. Syphilis (early) is treated with a single intramuscular benzathine penicillin G injection. Trichomoniasis is treated with oral metronidazole. We provide written treatment notes, advice on abstaining from sex until treatment is complete, and partner notification guidance so previous contacts can also be tested. Hepatitis B vaccination is offered to anyone non-immune. If you have ongoing risk, we discuss pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV at the same visit.
When to see a doctor
Test if you have had a new or anonymous partner, a condom break, symptoms such as discharge, burning on urination, genital sores, unusual rash, or pelvic pain, or if a previous partner has contacted you with a diagnosis. Routine annual testing is sensible for anyone sexually active with more than one partner. Pregnancy and pre-conception are also appropriate times to screen.
A high-risk exposure within the last 72 hours (HIV post-exposure prophylaxis is most effective inside 72 hours and useless after). Severe lower abdominal or pelvic pain with discharge or fever. A painful genital ulcer or rapidly spreading rash. Yellow eyes or skin (possible acute hepatitis). Painful testicular swelling. A sexual assault within the last week, where we can offer emergency contraception, PEP, baseline tests and onward referral with complete confidentiality.
You are unsure which tests you need or when to take them. A five-minute conversation by WhatsApp or in person settles which window applies, what samples are needed, and which results will be available before you fly home. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 for a same-day private appointment or hotel visit.
Prevention and early self-care
Consistent condom use remains the single most effective protection against most STIs, including HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and hepatitis B. Hepatitis B and HPV vaccination prevent two of the most serious viral infections and are widely available. For people with ongoing exposure risk, daily oral PrEP reduces HIV transmission by more than 99 percent when taken correctly. After a high-risk exposure, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a 28-day course of antiretrovirals that must start within 72 hours. Avoid sex with new partners until any current treatment is complete, and ask partners about their recent test history.
Summary
STD testing in Patong is straightforward, fast and confidential at our clinic. The most important step is matching the test to the window period, so a negative result is genuine reassurance rather than a false comfort. Most bacterial STIs are cured with a single antibiotic course, viral infections are managed long-term, and prevention through condoms, vaccines and PrEP is highly effective. Results go only to your WhatsApp, and we never share information with third parties.
“Most patients who walk in worried leave with reassurance the same hour. The few who test positive get treated immediately, in private, and with a clear plan for partner notification and follow-up. There is no judgement in this clinic, only a test, a result and the right treatment.”

Frequently asked questions
How soon after sex can I get tested?
It depends on the infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be detected one to two weeks after exposure. HIV is detectable from ten to fourteen days with an RNA PCR, eighteen to forty-five days with a 4th-generation blood test. Syphilis and hepatitis need three to ten weeks. Testing too early gives a falsely negative result. We will tell you the exact retest date based on your exposure.
Is the test anonymous and confidential?
Yes. You can use a first name only on the lab form, results are sent to your personal WhatsApp, and no information is shared with hotels, employers, embassies, insurers or travel companions. Payment is in cash or by card without an itemised description if you prefer.
Can you come to my hotel?
Yes. A doctor and nurse can perform the full panel at your hotel room anywhere in Patong, Kalim, Kamala, Karon or Surin. We bring a portable sample kit, draw blood and collect any swabs in private, and lab samples are couriered immediately. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 to arrange.
What if I had a high-risk exposure last night?
Come or message immediately. HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a 28-day course of antiretrovirals that significantly reduces transmission, but it must start within 72 hours and works best inside 24. We also offer hepatitis B post-exposure protection and emergency contraception where relevant.
How fast do I get results?
Rapid HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B tests give a result in about twenty minutes. PCR tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and HIV RNA are sent to a partner lab in Phuket and results return in one to three days, delivered to your WhatsApp.
What does a full STD panel cost?
Pricing depends on which tests are included and whether you choose clinic or hotel visit. We provide a clear written quote before any sample is taken, and we can build a panel that fits your budget and risk profile. WhatsApp us for current pricing.
