Urinary tract infections are one of the most common reasons women travelers come to our clinic, particularly in the first few days of a trip when dehydration, long flights and changes in routine all contribute. The good news is that an uncomplicated UTI is one of the fastest medical problems to fix: a urine dipstick takes minutes, the right antibiotic shortens symptoms within a day, and most patients are back on the beach the next morning.
What causes UTIs and how we diagnose them
Around 80% of urinary tract infections are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria that enter the urethra and ascend into the bladder. Risk rises with sexual activity, dehydration, long-haul travel, holding urine, and post-menopausal vaginal changes. Our diagnosis combines your symptom pattern (burning urination, urgency, frequency, suprapubic discomfort) with an on-site urine dipstick checking for nitrites, leukocyte esterase and blood. For recurrent or complicated cases we run a urine culture to identify the exact organism and antibiotic sensitivities, which we can usually return within 48 to 72 hours.
Severity and the right next step
| Severity | What it looks like | Right next step |
|---|---|---|
| Uncomplicated cystitis | Burning urination, frequency, urgency, mild suprapubic pain. No fever. No flank pain. | Clinic or hotel visit. Urine dipstick, 3 to 5-day antibiotic course, fluids. |
| Complicated UTI | Symptoms in pregnancy, men, recurrent infection, diabetes, kidney stones, or visible blood in urine. | Same-day assessment. Urine culture, longer antibiotic course, follow-up. |
| Pyelonephritis or sepsis | Fever above 38°C, flank or back pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, fast heartbeat, low blood pressure. | Urgent assessment. IV fluids, IV antibiotics, possible hospital admission. |
When to see a doctor
A simple bladder infection rarely turns serious, but when it does, it moves quickly. The infection can travel from the bladder up to the kidneys (pyelonephritis) within 24 to 48 hours, and from there into the bloodstream (urosepsis). The signs to watch for are fever, back or flank pain, nausea or vomiting, and feeling unusually unwell rather than just uncomfortable.
Fever above 38°C with UTI symptoms. Pain in your side, back or flank. Visible blood in your urine. Persistent vomiting. Confusion or fainting. UTI symptoms during pregnancy. Symptoms in a man (less common, more likely to be complicated). Symptoms that have not improved 48 hours after starting antibiotics. These can mean kidney infection, sepsis, or a complication that needs imaging and intravenous treatment.
You suspect a UTI on holiday. Self-medicating with leftover antibiotics or pharmacy ciprofloxacin frequently fails because of resistance patterns. A 15-minute consultation and a single urine dipstick will get you the right antibiotic at the right dose. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 for a same-day appointment or hotel-room visit.
Prevention and early self-care
While you wait to see us, sip water steadily (the goal is pale-yellow urine) and avoid alcohol, caffeine and bladder irritants such as carbonated drinks. Empty your bladder fully and urinate within 15 minutes of sexual activity. Over-the-counter paracetamol can ease the burning. The cranberry product evidence is weak and inconsistent, but it is safe to try if you tolerate it. For post-menopausal women with recurrent UTIs, low-dose vaginal estrogen has the strongest evidence for prevention and we can discuss this at your visit.
Summary
UTIs are common, treatable and almost never need to ruin a holiday, provided the right antibiotic is started quickly and the symptoms are watched for escalation. A urine dipstick, a tailored prescription and a follow-up plan are usually all that is required. If symptoms are atypical, severe, or occur in pregnancy or a male patient, the threshold for assessment should be lower because the consequences of a missed diagnosis are bigger.
“The single biggest cause of failed UTI treatment we see in tourists is empirical pharmacy ciprofloxacin. A dipstick and a five-minute history almost always pick a better antibiotic and a shorter course.”

Frequently asked questions
Can I get antibiotics for a UTI in Patong without a prescription?
Thai pharmacies often sell antibiotics over the counter, but we strongly advise against this for UTIs. The wrong antibiotic delays recovery, masks more serious infections, and worsens local resistance. A 15-minute clinic or hotel visit gets you an appropriate prescription, a urine dipstick to confirm the diagnosis, and a follow-up plan if symptoms do not settle.
How quickly will I feel better after antibiotics?
For uncomplicated cystitis, burning and urgency usually improve within 24 to 48 hours, and you should complete the full course (usually three to five days). If symptoms have not improved at 48 hours, or if you develop fever or flank pain, come back for reassessment because a urine culture may be needed.
Can the clinic come to my hotel for UTI treatment?
Yes. A doctor and nurse can come to your hotel anywhere in Patong, Kalim, Kamala, Karon and Surin. We bring everything needed for urine dipstick testing, prescription antibiotics and IV fluids if required. WhatsApp +66 95 073 5550 to arrange.
Is UTI treatment safe in pregnancy?
UTIs in pregnancy must always be treated because untreated infection raises the risk of kidney infection and pre-term labour. Several antibiotics are safe in pregnancy (cefalexin and nitrofurantoin in the first and second trimesters) while others (ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim, sulfa drugs near term) are not. Always tell us if you are or might be pregnant.
What does UTI treatment cost in Patong?
A standard UTI consultation, urine dipstick and antibiotic course at our clinic is significantly less than equivalent care at a private hospital. We provide itemised receipts for travel insurance reimbursement. Please WhatsApp us for current pricing.
When is a UTI an emergency?
Any UTI symptom combined with fever above 38°C, flank or back pain, vomiting, confusion or fainting needs same-day assessment. These are signs of pyelonephritis or sepsis, which require IV fluids, IV antibiotics and sometimes hospital admission.
